On January 20, 2021, President Biden signed Executive Order (EO) 13985, “Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.” Through the implementation of this Administration priority, the Department of Transportation (USDOT or Department) will undertake a comprehensive approach to advance racial equity for all, including individuals who have been historically underserved and adversely affected by persistent poverty or income inequality. On May 25, 2021, USDOT announced a Request for Information (RFI) to receive input from the public on the data and assessment tools available to assess transportation equity. Equitable access to transportation is a civil right, and this RFI is one action that USDOT is taking in response to EO 13985. Responses are requested no later than 5:00 pm (eastern time) on July 22, 2021. On June 18, from 2pm ET–3pm ET, USDOT is hosting a virtual public information session on Equity at DOT. During this information session, you will hear from senior DOT leaders about our equity agenda and Request for Information on Transportation Equity Data.

Older adults (≥65 years) account for 20% of the US population but are over-represented in multiple-vehicle crashes. Automated vehicles (AVs) may hold safety benefits for older adults, if they adopt this emerging technology. Prior to adoption, older adults must first be exposed to this technology. A research team led by Dr. Sherrilene Classen, examined the effects of AV exposure on older drivers’ perceptions in STRIDE Project D2 – UF & UAB’s Phase I Demonstration Study: Older Driver Experiences with Autonomous Vehicle Technology. The researchers developed and validated a survey to assess older drivers’ perceptions of AVs. This survey was used at baseline and after exposure to a simulator operating in automated mode and after riding in a highly automated shuttle (SAE Level 4). The findings of this study provide initial evidence that exposing older drivers to an automated simulator or on-road automated shuttle may promote older adults’ acceptance and adoption of AVs. A webinar to present this research is scheduled for May 26, 2021 12:00 PM (Eastern) [sponsored by the Council of University Transportation Centers]. Registration is open to all.

The International Transportation Forum just published a new research brief titled "Gender Equality, the Pandemic and a Transport Rethink." "Covid-19 disproportionately affects women worldwide. Crisis responses allow a rethink of transport policies to improve gender equality. This will not only reduce the unequal impact of the pandemic on women; the long-term recovery towards more sustainable, resilient and inclusive transport will depend on measures that address the priorities of both women and men."
